For most of human history, women have typically paid more attention to haircare than men. Your mom, sister and girlfriend probably have a much more profound understanding of what it means to have healthy hair than your average guy. But hair is hair. And men should take a step back and give their locks a bit of love as well. Here are 7 tips to keep the hair on your head happy and healthy.

  1. Keep your scalp clean

Your head is exposed to all kinds of dirt and dust every single day. Those who work on a construction site or on the side of road even moreso. Do your part to keep your scalp healthy by regularly washing your hair and cleansing your scalp. Just make sure not to overdo it — overwashing your hair can strip away naturally occurring oils that protect the hair follicles.

  1. Spend some money on hair products

Really healthy-looking hair requires more than just shampoo. Consider investing in styling products that work well for your hair. That could be your run-of-the-mill hair gel, to styling wax or mousse. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars — but set aside some space in your budget to spend more than you usually do.

  1. Go easy on the blow dryer

The hairdryer is an important tool to get ready in a pinch when you need to leave the house shortly after a shower. But that much heat can damage hair and leave it dry and frail. Choose a lower setting on the blow dryer if possible. And don’t spend more than a couple minutes drying your hair.

  1. Use a conditioner

One of the aforementioned hair products you should invest in is conditioner. There are a few different kinds, most commonly the kind you use in the shower and wash out, or apply and leave-in throughout the day. Just like shampoo, you don’t want to overdo it. But conditioning hair once a week can be healthy. Skip the 2-in-1 shampoo-plus-conditioner though — get one of each.

  1. Moisturize your scalp

You know how much fun it is to have dry hands. A dry scalp is no better. Some products like tea tree oil or home remedies like coconut oil can help keep your scalp from becoming too dry and soothe your itchy, red head.

  1. Be committed

Healthy hair won’t come about with one application of moisturizer, avoiding the blow dryer or regular shampooing. You’ll need to stay consistent with whatever method(s) you choose to take care of your head and hair. When you do, you’ll be happy you did.

  1. Treat hair loss

About half of all men will experience some form of hair loss by the time they reach 40 years of age — many will experience it well before that. There effective treatments out there to help men reverse the noticeable effects of male-pattern baldness. Foams and sprays like minoxidil and medications like finasteride are potential options.

If you’re experiencing hair loss as a result of male-pattern baldness, talk to a doctor to explore what your options are. A qualified physician will be able to assess the causes of your hair loss and suggest a strategy for moving forward. No matter what you do, start taking care of your hair today.
