Minoxidil is a medication used to treat hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) and to promote hair regrowth.
This molecule is primarily intended for individuals aged between 18 and 65 years, as it can halt further hair loss and stimulate hair regrowth on the scalp.
Minoxidil is primarily used for treating hair loss (androgenetic alopecia), specifically in cases of male or female pattern baldness. It can help in slowing down hair loss and promoting new hair growth.
Minoxidil works by widening blood vessels around shrinking hair follicles on the scalp.
This allows more blood, oxygen, and nutrients to reach the hair roots, reversing follicle miniaturization caused by DHT. It kickstarts shrunken follicles to regrow thicker, fuller hair and can reactivate follicles that have been dormant for years. With consistent use, Minoxidil sustains healthy hair regrowth.
The key difference between oral and topical Minoxidil is how the medication is administered.
Oral Minoxidil comes in tablet form that is swallowed and absorbed into the bloodstream. Topical Minoxidil is a liquid solution that is applied directly onto the scalp where needed.
Oral and topical Minoxidil both deliver Minoxidil to hair follicles. Oral Minoxidil is absorbed systemically, circulating throughout the body and reaching hair follicles internally. In contrast, topical Minoxidil is absorbed through the scalp skin, specifically targeting the scalp area.
Oral Minoxidil may have more systemic side effects, but it often yields faster results due to its ease of use.
Most men see the effects of Minoxidil between 3 to 6 months after starting consistent treatment. However, the medication needs to be used for at least 12 months before determining if it will work for regrowing your hair.
Minoxidil works gradually by moving affected hair follicles into the growth stage. It takes time to reverse the miniaturization shrinkage and restart thick, healthy hair production. Results vary from subtle hair thickening to dramatic regrowth, depending on factors like age and genetics. With proper use, Minoxidil typically shows its maximum ability to regrow hair within 1-2 years. Consistent long-term use is key.

The images clearly demonstrate thickening of thinning hair and regrowth where bald spots once existed. Most men see noticeable improvements in hair density, coverage, and texture over time. As with any treatment, individual results will vary based on adherence to dosage guidelines and underlying medical conditions.
Minoxidil is clinically tested for both stopping hair loss and regrowing new hair for the vast majority of men who use it properly and consistently.
In clinical trials, over 80% of men regrow hair after using Minoxidil daily for at least 6 months, with numbers continuing to improve steadily up to 4 years.
Just like any medication, results vary from person to person. As long as dosage guidelines are followed, consistent long term use gives men an excellent chance of restoring lost hair.
Minoxidil is generally safe when used under the supervision of a healthcare professional, ensuring it's the right option for the patient.
Both oral and topical Minoxidil have been clinically studied for safely and effectiveness. However, some key differences exist in how the different formulations work:
Oral Minoxidil produces higher levels of the active ingredient in the bloodstream so it typically works faster and grows thicker hair than topical. But unwanted facial/body hair is more common with oral tablets.
Topical solutions applied directly to the scalp can target specific balding areas for localized regrowth. But absorption rates tend to be lower than with oral route.
In the end, topical and oral Minoxidil yield comparable results. Oral Minoxidil tends to show benefits sooner and enhanced overall regrowth for most users. But topical allows focusing treatment only on balding regions. Both remain well-established, highly effective methods to stimulate new hair growth.
Consultation with a doctor helps determine which formulation and dosage strength makes the most sense for each patient based on their unique hair loss profile and medical history. But on the whole, oral Minoxidil proves more universally optimal if side effects like unwanted hair growth are tolerable.
Minoxidil liquid, created at UPGUYS, features a unique formula that enhances Minoxidil absorption and penetration into the scalp skin. This formula contains minimal alcohol, resulting in rare irritation.
On the other hand, Minoxidil foam incorporates emollients, making it gentler on the scalp and leaving no greasy residue. However, foam has a lower absorption rate because a significant amount may remain on the hair and not reach the scalp skin where the absorption happens.
In terms of effectiveness when used as directed, both Minoxidil foam and liquid solutions promote hair regrowth. While the regrowth capabilities are similar, the foam is less likely to cause irritation but may be somewhat less effective. The right liquid formula can offer better absorption and thus more effectiveness but may irritate individuals with very sensitive skin.
Clinical formulations of Minoxidil use a few key ingredients along with the active component, Minoxidil, to enhance absorption and efficacy. In Minoxidil topical solutions and oral treatments, you'll find:
• Minoxidil - The active ingredient approved for hair growth by Health Canada.
• Propylene glycol - Maximizes penetrations and absorption through the skin.
• Alcohol - Enables the Minoxidil to very rapidly permeate the scalp.
• Purified water - Solvent to form the solution.
• Glycerin (some products only) - Skin conditioning agent for hydration & softer hair.
Additional ingredients like pH balancers, emollients, preservatives and penetration boosters are also used in very small amounts to make the product stable, tolerable and potent in restoring thinning hair.
Both Minoxidil and finasteride are considered safe and effective medications for treating male pattern baldness, but they work in different ways:
Minoxidil (topical or oral) works by improving blood flow and nutrients to shrinkings follicles to revive them to grow new, thicker hair. It must be used regularly to maintain benefits.
Finasteride is a daily oral tablet that blocks DHT, the hormone that causes hair follicles to weaken over time. It addresses the root cause for long lasting prevention and regrowth.
Research shows using Minoxidil and finasteride together yields significantly better results, as the drugs are complementary. Minoxidil directly fuels hair growth, while finasteride protects follicles and minimizes further loss.
For those concerned only with regrowing lost hair quickly, Minoxidil may provide faster, more noticeable cosmetic improvement. However, combining it with finasteride leads to optimal long term hair revitalization for most men.
So using both treatments as a multi-therapy approach is ideal. But Minoxidil alone can effectively help reverse thinning hair if finasteride is not an option.
Minoxidil is contraindicated for some people. You should not use Minoxidil if:
• You are under 18 years old
• You have sudden unexplained hair loss (as Minoxidil is for pattern baldness)
• You have skin irritation or infection on the scalp
• You have had a bad reaction to Minoxidil in the past
• You have heart, liver or kidney disease
Also use caution before using Minoxidil if you have other medical conditions or take certain medications. Be sure to fully disclose your health history to your prescribing doctor so they can determine if Minoxidil is appropriate for you. Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions occur even in those with no issues taking the medication previously.
Minoxidil should be OK for most healthy adults suffering from progressive pattern baldness. But because it is absorbed into the bloodstream, medical oversight is still essential to establish safety before starting treatment.
Minoxidil is the active ingredient in Rogaine, which is a popular brand of topical Minoxidil manufactured by Johnson & Johnson. It was initially approved as a hair regrowth treatment in 1988 under the name Rogaine, becoming the first FDA-approved solution for male hair loss due to its positive clinical trial results.
Nowadays, Minoxidil is accessible in both topical and oral forms from various suppliers. UPGUYS provides top-quality Minoxidil products in both topical and oral forms.
Clinical trials confirm that Minoxidil effectively promotes the growth of scalp hair in cases of male and female pattern baldness. Nevertheless, using it for stimulating hair growth in other body areas is considered off-label.
While preliminary research indicates that Minoxidil might assist in beard growth for some men, and careful application on the eyebrows could potentially enhance regrowth there, it's important to note that there is limited data regarding the effectiveness of these uses.
Certain forms of topical Minoxidil are available over the counter in Canada. However, UPGUYS's topical formula, due to its specific formulation, is considered a prescription medication, necessitating consultation and medical supervision.
Oral Minoxidil also requires a prescription, which involves scheduling an appointment with a licensed physician, either in-person or through telemedicine. The doctor must assess your unique health profile to determine the appropriateness and safety of Minoxidil treatment before prescribing the medication and offering dosage guidance. The prescription for Minoxidil can only be filled once it has
Yes, you can buy oral or topical Minoxidil online in Canada, but an online prescription from a licensed Canadian doctor is still required. Once prescribed, the medication can then be purchased through a reputable online pharmacy or telemedicine provider.
This allows the convenience of home delivery without needing to visit a traditional pharmacy in person. After filling out a medical questionnaire, a doctor assesses your case to determine if they can safely prescribe Minoxidil. Once approved, your order ships quickly straight to your door.
The key is that the online pharmacy and prescribing doctors must be based in Canada. Only Health Canada approved products from licensed pharmacies can legally be dispensed, ensuring you receive verified, effective treatment. Take caution ordering Minoxidil online from overseas or unauthorized sellers.
Yes, a prescription is required for most strengths and forms of Minoxidil in Canada, whether ordering online or in person.
Health Canada regulations mandate a licensed physician must assess your medical history before deeming Minoxidil usage appropriate.
Once a Canadian doctor writes your prescription, you can submit it to an approved pharmacy. Without current medical oversight, purchasing Minoxidil remains prohibited, so a valid prescription is essential.
Getting a Minoxidil prescription in Canada is now easier than ever thanks to telemedicine providers like UPGUYS. Rather than scheduling time for an in-person clinic visit, you can conveniently consult online with one of UPGUYS' licensed Canadian physicians from the comfort and privacy of your home.

Yes, UPGUYS provides both topical and oral Minoxidil treatment options for hair loss.
Our physicians can prescribe Minoxidil solutions to apply directly to the scalp or low-dose Minoxidil tablets that work through internal absorption. Both clinically proven regimens stimulate follicles to combat thinning hair and pattern baldness.

For women seeking Minoxidil products with specialized dosing, platforms like Everbliss.com offer options tailored to their needs.
No. Branded Minoxidil products like Rogaine, Kirkland, Nioxin, Keeps, Equate, and Lipogaine are not available at UPGUYS. You get the UPGUYS Minoxidil.
Oral Minoxidil should only be taken as explicitly instructed by the physician who prescribed the medication. Some general points to note:
• Take the tablet with at least 8 oz of water once per day, every day. Consistency is key.
• The most common dose is 3 mg daily. Follow your physician’s prescribed dosage only.
• Take your daily tablet ideally at the same time for convenience.
• Do not chew, crush or divide tablets when ingesting. Swallow whole.
• You may start noticing results from oral treatment around month 3 or 4.
• Call your doctor if any concerning symptoms arise while on treatment.
• Ensure proper medical oversight for refills; do not take expired medication.
• Hair regrowth is a gradual process that requires patience. To track your progress, we advise taking scalp pictures every few weeks and discussing them with your doctor during treatment.
However, your doctor will provide the specific validated directions tailored to your situation upon prescribing oral Minoxidil. It's crucial to follow customized usage guidelines to ensure proper treatment and avoid potential side effects.
Topical Minoxidil should only be applied according to the instructions provided by the prescribing physician. However, standard usage guidelines are:
• Apply 1 mL (around 20 drops) of solution twice daily, approximately 12 hours apart. The AM bottle is for the morning and the PM bottle is for the night time.
• Apply directly onto dry scalp in needed areas. Massage it in with your fingers.
• Wash hands thoroughly after application to limit absorption elsewhere.
• Continue use for a minimum of 4 months before assessing treatment efficacy.
• Contact your doctor about any concerning reactions and before obtaining refills.
• Hair regrowth is a gradual process that requires patience. To track your progress, we advise taking scalp pictures every few weeks and discussing them with your doctor during treatment.
Be sure to follow the specific directions from your doctor which accounts for individual factors. Consistency and proper application technique are vital to allow Minoxidil to reach the hair follicles and stimulate regrowth.
Here are some tips to get the best possible results from Minoxidil treatment:
• Use as directed - Carefully follow your doctor’s instructions for dosage, frequency, and duration. Consistency is key over the years for robust regrowth.
• Combine treatments – Using Minoxidil along with other treatments like finasteride has been clinically proven to augment results.
• Be patient – Minoxidil works gradually. Give treatment at least 6 months before looking for changes. Positive effects continue increasing over the years.
• Track application – Mark calendars to ensure you apply Minoxidil solution as instructed by your physician.
• Invest in quality products – Choose reputable brands of proven formulas like those offered by Health Canada approved manufacturers such as UPGUYS.
Following these simple recommendations in conjunction with your doctor’s advice can help maximize Minoxidil’s hair regrowth potential.
Some potential side effects can occur when using Minoxidil, but most are mild and resolve quickly. Common symptoms include:
• Scalp itchiness or dryness
• Headache
• Unwanted hair growth (more common with oral Minoxidil)
• Low blood pressure/dizziness
• Fluid retention causing swollen hands/feet
Rarely, more serious effects like rash, chest pain, or rapid weight gain may occur. Minoxidil absorption into the bloodstream also makes interactions with other medications possible.
However, most men who use Minoxidil as prescribed experience no concerning persistent side effects. Talk to your doctor about any unusual reactions. Under medical guidance, adjusting the treatment regimen typically alleviates unwanted issues.
It is generally recommended to wait at least half an hour before washing your hair after applying topical Minoxidil solution. This allows sufficient time for the medication to fully absorb through the scalp into the bloodstream. Washing too soon can flush away much of the Minoxidil before it reaches the hair follicles.
To optimize results, try to apply your nightly dose right before bed so you achieve a full 12-hour absorbency window before waking up. If applying your morning dose after showering/bathing, hold off on washing hair again until later that afternoon or evening. Avoid excessive washing and hair products in general while undergoing treatment.
Timing application strategically around your schedule allows both Minoxidil doses to fully penetrate the scalp. This helps the medication work effectively to stimulate robust hair regrowth.
Minoxidil can potentially interact with several types of medications. The most common drug interactions include:
• Diuretics ("water pills") - Minoxidil can make these less effective for conditions like high blood pressure or swelling.
• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) - Minoxidil may inhibit the excretion of NSAIDS like ibuprofen, increasing their levels.
• Certain blood pressure medications like Guanethidine - combination use lowers blood pressure too much.
• Retinoids and steroids (skin products) - may increase systemic absorption of Minoxidil.
Always inform your prescribing doctor of ALL medications you take, whether prescription, over-the-counter, herbal supplements or recreational. This allows them to effectively screen for dangerous combinations before approving Minoxidil. Also immediately report any new medications to your physician after starting treatment. Staying vigilant prevents complications.
Yes, Minoxidil does expire after a certain period. Compounded products typically have a shelf life of about 6 months before they expire.
Here are some key points about Minoxidil expiration:
• Expired oral tablets or topical solutions may start to lose effectiveness in boosting hair growth as the drug breaks down.
• Using degraded batches could also increase the risk of skin irritation and other side effects.
• Always check expiry dates on the packaging and do not take or apply if past date. The product should display the month/year of expiry.
Here are some of the key warnings and precautions to consider before using Minoxidil:
• Inform your doctor of any medical conditions or medications to assess the safety of use. Minoxidil impacts blood circulation.
• Stop treatment and call your physician promptly if you experience chest pain, dizziness, sudden weight gain, or swelling in the hands/feet.
• Use of Minoxidil may cause hair to grow elsewhere on the body - tell doctor if there are serious concerns.
• Keep oral tablets and topical solutions safely out of reach of children and pets to avoid accidental ingestion.
• Discontinue use if you experience hypersensitivity reactions like severe rash, itching, or trouble breathing.
• Use proper dosing or results may suffer and side effects worsen. More is NOT better with Minoxidil!
Essentially, medical oversight is required because Minoxidil reaches the bloodstream and affects cardiovascular function. So have your health thoroughly evaluated and follow instructions to minimize issues. But most men use Minoxidil for years very safely with their doctor’s guidance.
Yes, it is possible to overdose on Minoxidil, either intentionally or accidentally. Taking more than the recommended dosage of Minoxidil greatly raises your risk of experiencing dangerous side effects related to how the medication impacts circulation and fluid retention.
Potential symptoms of Minoxidil overdose include dizziness, rapid weight gain, swelling of hands/feet/face, fainting, chest pain, and very low blood pressure. In rare cases, overdose can lead to heart failure and require emergency care.
To avoid the risk of overdose, carefully follow medical instructions for the proper dosage and frequency of Minoxidil tablets or solution. Never increase the amount or use more often than prescribed. Keep medication safely secure from unintended ingestion and only refill when truly depleted. With responsible use under medical supervision, overdose remains unlikely. But seek immediate help if overdose reactions ever do occur.
Here are the key storage instructions for Minoxidil:
• Store at room temperature away from excess heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.
• Keep Minoxidil tablets in the original container with the lid tightly closed.
• Topical Minoxidil bottles should remain securely sealed when not actively in use.
• Do not place or store Minoxidil in humid places like bathrooms.
• Ensure oral and topical formulations are safely kept out of reach of children and pets.
• Check expiry dates regularly and properly dispose of expired products.
• Speak to your pharmacist if you require additional guidance about ideal storage methods to preserve medication integrity.
Follow these simple Minoxidil handling and storage recommendations, and your treatment should remain potent and effective throughout the entire usage period.
Minoxidil shedding refers to the temporary increased hair loss some men notice after first starting treatment.
It typically lasts 2-6 weeks as thinner hairs fall out to make room for new, thicker growth.
This shows the medication is working to shift follicles into regrowth mode. Shedding should fully resolve as you continue using Minoxidil properly and does not negatively impact its efficacy.
Stay diligent through the initial adjustment phase. Inform your doctor if shedding persists beyond 6 weeks. But in most cases, Minoxidil shedding is a positive sign heralding imminent hair regrowth coming within a few months.
Here is what typically happens when someone stops using Minoxidil:
• Minoxidil must be continued to maintain benefits. In most cases, new hair growth resulting from Minoxidil treatment will start to fall out within 6-12 months after discontinuation.
• In a minority of long-term users, especially men who have used Minoxidil for 2+ years, regrowth may be sustained for an extended period.
So consistent, ongoing application is key for maintaining the positive effects of Minoxidil on restoring your hair.
Here are the signs that Minoxidil treatment is working for you:
• In some cases, the first sign of progress may be hair shedding around 2-6 weeks after beginning treatment. While not everyone experiences this, it can be a positive sign, indicating that hair follicles are transitioning into active regrowth mode.
• Look for the appearance of fine, colorless "peach fuzz" hairs along the hairline and crown as early as month 3. This demonstrates new follicles forming and producing new strands.
• Notice gradual thickening and lengthening of regrown hairs between months 3-9. Hair density visibly increases, filling thinning areas with healthy hair.
• If Minoxidil is working, most men see significantly improved hair volume, coverage, and texture around the 6-12 month mark although benefits continue accruing over years.
Tracking progress monthly using photos and a mirror helps confirm if the treatment is effective. Update your doctor at 3 and 6 months to evaluate together. Consistency is vital so keep applying Minoxidil twice daily even through shedding and other transitional stages. Within 6 months you should see clear signs of regrowth if responding well.
